Askern Moss Road Infant Academy

PSHE (including Relationships Education)

INTENT

At Askern Moss Road Infant Academy, all children will be taught a high-quality PSHE education that equips them with the skills and knowledge to be able to embrace creating a happy and successful adult life, making informed choices about their well-being, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy. We will build on children’s knowledge and skills each year to help them to make decisions when facing risks, challenges and complex contexts. PSHE and Relationships Education also ensures our children develop resilience, to know how and when to ask for help, and where they can access support.

PSHE has an integral part to play in building pupils’ mental wellbeing and their understanding of themselves as part of a family, community and wider society. As our pupils grow, they will understand their rights as global citizens and the responsibility that this brings.

At Moss Road, we follow the Jigsaw PSHE scheme of work which meets the requirement of the National Curriculum and EYFS framework; Jigsaw covers all areas of PSHE for the primary phase including statutory Relationships and Health Education, Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural education (SMSC) and the fundamental British Values of Democracy, Rule of Law, Respect and Tolerance, Individual Liberty. However this is adapted to ensure the curriculum meets the needs of our children and local context. Many aspects will also be covered through general day-to-day interactions, assemblies, stories and through visits and visitors.

Jigsaw PSHE brings together Personal, Social and Health education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development through six different half-termly topics:

Being Me in My World,

Celebrating Difference

Dreams and Goals

Healthy Me,

Relationships

Changing Me.

Our Core Values provide the platform on which we have built our curriculum offer at Askern Moss Road Infant Academy.

Our PSHE and RSE curriculum is underpinned by our Core Values in the following ways;

We teach our children to be resilient by helping them to stay focused on an activity and to keep trying even when challenges occur. The children learn that continued effort or a different approach will pay off and they are pleased when goals are achieved. The children enjoy challenges for their own sake, rather than external praise or reward.

We teach our children to be independent by helping them to work without adult support. They know where to find things to help them learn and can organise themselves and their belongings. They are taught to make their own choices and can look after themselves, displaying age-appropriate self-care.

We promote the core value of ambition by encouraging children to set personal goals and aspire to reach their full potential in various aspects of their lives. Through activities such as career exploration, storytelling of role models, and discussions about future aspirations, we inspire children to envision possibilities and take proactive steps towards their dreams.

Respect is a core value and we teach children to recognise and value the diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and feelings of others. By modelling and reinforcing respectful behaviour within the school community, we cultivate an atmosphere where every individual feels valued and included.

We want the children to be creative, showing curiosity about the world around me /objects, events and people. The children will be encouraged to find ways to solve problems. They will make links and use their own experience.

We want the children to be fearless, always willing to have a go, showing a ‘can do’ attitude. We aim for then to initiate activities and to seek challenge. We encourage the children to take risks and engage in new experiences. They understand that they will make mistakes when they are learning.
